Un articolo recentemente apparso su arXiv si pone l’obiettivo di fornire una vasta review dello stato dell’arte dell’uso da parte degli studiosi sia dei social media sia delle altmetrics .

I social media si sono integrati nel processo di produzione della comunicazione scientifica in due maniere: principalmente attraverso l’uso delle piattaforme dei social media da parte dei ricercatori e la promozione di nuovi indicatori sulla base dell’interazione con queste piattaforme. La ricerca in quest’area poi ha accelerato fino a coniare il termine “altmetrics” e a promuoverne l’uso. Questo articolo fornisce un resoconto approfondito sullo stato dell’arte dell’uso da parte degli studiosi sia dei social media sia delle altmetrics.
L’analisi consiste di due parti principali: nella prima si esamina l’uso dei social media da parte dell’accademia, valutando le varie funzioni che tali piattaforme assumono nel processo della comunicazione scientifica e i fattori che influiscono su quest’uso. Nella seconda parte si rivedono alcuni studi empirici sulle altmetrics, distudento le varie interpretazioni del termine, le modalità di raccolta dei dati, le limitazioni metodologiche e le differenze tra le piattaforme.
La revisione si conclude con una discussione critica sulle implicazioni di questa trasformazione nel sistema della comunicazione scientifica .
